The four UK healthcare regulators

Healthcare regulation is devolved — each UK nation has its own regulator, its own legislation and its own registration process. We support providers in all four.

England

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Providers carrying on a regulated activity must register under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and meet the Fundamental Standards. We handle the full application, statement of purpose and evidence base.

Wales

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW)

HIW registers and inspects independent healthcare services in Wales under the Care Standards Act and associated regulations. We prepare your registration and the policies and governance evidence HIW expects.

Scotland

Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS)

HIS regulates independent clinics and healthcare services in Scotland, with its own standards and registration requirements. We guide you through the Scottish framework from application to inspection.

Northern Ireland

Regulation & Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA)

RQIA registers and inspects independent healthcare in Northern Ireland against the relevant minimum standards. We prepare your registration and supporting documentation to RQIA requirements.

Important

Registration is a legal requirement

Across the UK, carrying on a regulated activity without registration is a criminal offence — with the risk of substantial fines and, in the most serious cases, imprisonment. If your service involves the treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic or screening procedures, or surgical procedures, you very probably need to register. If you are unsure, we will tell you for certain — usually within a single phone call.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Who regulates independent healthcare in England?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. Providers carrying on a regulated activity must be registered.

Do I need to register before treating patients?

Yes. You must be registered with the relevant regulator before you provide a regulated activity. Operating without registration is a criminal offence.

I operate in more than one nation — can you help?

Yes. Many of our clients operate across borders. We manage parallel registrations with the CQC, HIW, HIS and RQIA so your standards and documentation stay consistent throughout.
